Czech Society for Structural Biology

The goal of the competition is to motivate young scientists (PhD degree or equivalent) to work in the field, to support a high level of research and study at Czech and Slovak universities in this field, and to contribute to the involvement of young scientists in the community of structural biologists and related fields.

The prize includes a monetary reward of 25,000 CZK in the form of a scholarship and coverage of the regular conference fee for XXI Discussions in Structural Molecular Biology and 7th User Meeting of CIISB in 2025.

Deadline for submitting application: January 10, 2025
Announcement of results: not later than February 19, 2025

Application Form

Volební komise ČSSB nyní přijímá nominace kandidátů pro volby do Rady, které se uskuteční na jaře 2025. Vyzýváme všechny členy, aby se zúčastnili nominačního procesu.

Informace o činnosti Rady:
Rada ČSSB je výkonným orgánem společnosti, který se skládá ze sedmi členů volených valnou hromadou na pětileté období. Rada se schází dvakrát ročně, obvykle na konferenci v Nových Hradech nebo online. Mezi její povinnosti patří odpovědnost za hospodaření společnosti, správa členské základny, reprezentace v rámci Rady vědeckých společností, příprava grantových žádostí, jejich realizace a čerpání a v neposlední řadě organizace klíčových akcí, jako jsou konference a přednáškové cykly.  Po volbách se nově zvolení členové Rady na svém prvním zasedání rozhodnou, jaké budou jejich konkrétní role.

Jak nominovat kandidáty:
• Období pro nominace: 15. září 2024 – 31. ledna 2025.
• Způsobilost: Nominováni mohou být všichni stávající řádní členové ČSSB.
• Způsob nominace: Nominace zasílejte e-mailem členům volebního komise.
• Co je třeba uvést: Celé jméno a afiliaci nominovaného a stručné prohlášení podporující jeho kandidaturu. Vlastní nominace jsou vítány.

Profily kandidátů:
Vyzýváme všechny nominované, aby předložili svůj stručný profil, včetně krátkého představení své práce, případného programu pro práci v Radě ČSSB a pokud možno fotografie. Rozsah textu maximálně 150 slov. Profily kandidátů budou před volbami představeny členům ČSSB prostřednictvím emailu a zveřejněny na webových stránkách ČSSB.

Způsob volby:
Volba proběhne tajným hlasováním během valné hromady ČSSB na zámku v Nových Hradech v jižních Čechách, v souvislosti s každoroční konferencí Discussions.

Vladimír Sklenář was an expert in nuclear magnetic resonance who developed methods that allowed scientists to study biomacromolecules in solution with atomic resolution. But Vladimír’s deep insight into NMR did not prevent him from appreciating advantages of other approaches of structural biology and understanding the added value of their combination. In the time when Czech scientists were used to compete whose lab acquires the most expansive equipment,  Vladimír put emphasis on collaborating, sharing instruments and building publicly accessible research infrastructure. He has been behind the establishment and operation of the Czech infrastructure for integrative structural biology. He significantly contributed to the connection between the CEITEC structural biology laboratories and the emerging BIOCEV central facilities for structural biology and to securing national funding not only for operation of these facilities but also for upgrades of equipment and strategies of the infrastructure development. His trace is also visible in the membership of the Czech Republic in the European infrastructure for structural biology Instruct and in support of the national community of structural biologists. He truly served well the European community and the tight interaction between the Czech and European structural biologists.
Since the foundation of the Czech Society for Structural Biology Vladimír has been active as the vice-chairman of its Council and participated in organization of the annual Discussions in Structural Molecular Biology and User meetings of CIISB in Nové Hrady. He contributed to the idea of evaluating PhD theses of the structural biology field.
We have known Vladimír not only as an expert in his area of research but also as a friend, lover of good wine and a person with an attitude of help and humor, enabling communication among scientists and development of new ideas. He strongly supported young talented scientists and always placed benefit of the community above personal profit.
